The Lyrics Project: How~Regina Spektor

It’s that time again folks…where I run out of things to write and share song lyrics instead…

I am a huge fan of Regina Spektor’s lyrics.  She has such a different and fantastic way of expressing things…she’s just not your average songwriter.  Her words always seem to have a way of getting to me.  They resonate with me on a super personal level that leaves me breathless.   When I hear her music, I am often left thinking about things in ways I hadn’t before.  She has some songs that just sound so silly, but when you start thinking about the words they are oddly poignant, and it’s something that I appreciate on so many levels.  At any rate, today I’m sharing “How” from her album What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, but I really recommend checking out some of her other songs as well.  She’s totally worth the time it’ll take if you really listen to her words.

“HOW”

by Regina Spektor

~

How can I forget your love?

How can I never see you again?

There is time and place

for one more sweet embrace.

And there’s a time,

when it all ,

went wrong.

I guess you know by now

that we will meet again somehow…

How,

Oh baby how

can I begin again?

How can I try to love someone new,

someone who isn’t you?

How can our love be true

when I’m not, I’m not over you?

I guess you know by now

that we will meet again somehow…

Time can come and take away the pain

But I just want my memories to remain:

to hear your voice, to see your face.

There’s not one moment I’d erase.

You are a guest here now.

So baby, how

can I forget your love?

How can I never see you again?

How can I ever know

why some stay others go?

When I don’t, I don’t want you to go.

I guess I know by now

that we will meet again somehow…

Time can come and wipe away the pain.

But I just want my mind to stay the same:

to hear your voice, to see your face.

There’s not one moment I’d erase.

You are a guest here now.

So baby, how can I forget your love?

How can I never see you again?

Lyric Project: Kathleen

Here’s my newest Lyric Project post.

Don’t forget to scroll to the bottom for the link to hear the song.

I was introduced to Josh Ritter by a nice lady I met on the good old interwebs.  It took me a while to warm up to him.  I don’t know why, because he has some really good lyrics.  I find that with Josh Ritter, I tend to really like or really dislike his songs…no grey areas for him and me.

I like the song that follows for two reasons: a) because what girl wouldn’t like to have someone say the first lines to/about her, and b) because I can sympathize with the narrator of the song: knowing you’re not the person someone would choose if they had another option.  I can’t decide if this is a sad song or not…for some reason, I want to feel hopeful for the guy.

You’ll have to decide for yourself.

Kathleen

by Josh Ritter

All the other girls here are stars;

you are the northern lights.

They try to shine in through your curtain,

You’re too close and too bright.

They try and they try but everything that they do

is the ghost of a trace of a pale imitation of you.

I’ll be the one to drive you back home Kathleen

This party was made with the night air

and the chance that a smile

Will wind its way from your face to one of the boys in your line.

Well you act like you’re hip to there tricks and you’re strong

but a virgin Wurlitzer heart never once had a song.

I’ll be the one to drive you back home Kathleen.

And I’ll have you back by break of day.

I’m going your way anyway

and if you’d like to come along,

I’ll be yours for a song.

I know you are waiting and I know that it is not for me.

But I’m here and I’m ready and I saved you the passenger seat.

And I won’t be your last dance just your last good night.

Every heart is a package tangled up in knots someone else tied.

I’ll be the one to drive you back home Kathleen

So crawl up your trellis and quietly back into your room.

And I’ll coast down the length of your drive by the light of the moon.

The next time we meet some new kind of hello-

both our hearts have a secret only the both of us know

about the night that I drove you back home Kathleen.

All The Best

So, here is post number two in the lyrics project.  Don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom so that you can listen to the actual song for yourself.

This song is from one of my all time absolute favorite song writers, John Prine.  I am just going to tell you, the man is a genius!

While I recognize his music is not for everybody, his lyrics are so intelligent and witty that he deserves any and all praise I can give.  I can go back to his music over and over and never get tired of it.  I can easily see him popping up again in the lyric project posts.

John Prine has been in the music scene for a long, long time and for some reason not too many people know about him.

In my eyes, he’s probably the most under appreciated song writer out there.

I guess it’s not that hard for me to wish him all the best!

All The Best

by John Prine

I wish you love and happiness

I guess I wish you all the best

I wish you don’t do like I do

And ever fall in love with someone like you

Cause if you fell just like I did

You’d probably walk around the block like a little kid

But kids don’t know they can only guess

How hard it is to wish you happiness

I guess that love is like a Christmas card

You decorate a tree you throw it in the yard

It decays and dies and the snowmen melt

Well I once knew love I knew how love felt

Yeah I knew love love knew me

And when I walked love walked with me

And I got no hate and I got no pride

Well I got so much love that I cannot hide

Say you drive a Chevy say you drive a Ford

You say you drive around the town till you just get bored

Then you change your mind for something else to do

And your heart gets bored with your mind and it changes you

Well it’s a doggone shame and it’s an awful mess

I wish you love I wish you happiness

I wish you love I wish you happiness

I guess I wish you all the best
